Arianna Yurkewicz, a recent Salem State University graduate, earned her degree in

Sport and Movement Science with a Pre-Rehabilitation concentration and minors in Psychology and Sociology. Now pursuing a Doctorate in Occupational Therapy at Western New England University, Arianna credits Salem State for laying the strong academic and experiential foundation that helped her transition smoothly into graduate school.

Originally from Spring Lake, New Jersey, Arianna entered college during the uncertainty of the pandemic. She reflects on that time as one of great personal and collective growth, a journey that brought her to Salem State, where she found both a sense of purpose and a welcoming community. From the very first day of classes, she felt engaged, supported, and confident that SSU was not just a school, but a home.

Arianna chose Salem State because of its hands-on learning opportunities, strong academic programs, and the vibrant, historic city of Salem. The Sport and Movement Science department stood out for its experiential focus, allowing her to dive deep into real-world applications of classroom learning through labs, internships, and fieldwork. One of the most impactful experiences she had was shadowing an occupational therapist at an outpatient clinic that served individuals with intellectual disabilities and autism. This experience deepened her passion for OT and solidified her career goals.

Arianna was also highly involved on campus. She worked as a department associate in the Sport and Movement Science department, where she formed strong professional relationships with faculty and staff. She also played a pivotal role in reviving the Sport and Movement Science Club and served as its president, helping to create a supportive, health-focused community for students. These leadership roles helped her develop vital communication and teamwork skills that she now uses daily in her graduate studies.

She speaks fondly of faculty mentors like Dr. Abboud, who played a key role in guiding her academic and career path, as well as professors like Dr. Dion, Dr. Diamico, Dr. Bloom, Dr. Ely, and Dr. Gillis, all of whom left lasting impressions. Arianna also competed in the Academic Decathlon at the ACSM Conference, where her team placed in the top 10 among more than 50 schools, a highlight of her academic journey.

Since graduation, Arianna has been thriving in her doctoral program, recently completing research on the experiences of caregivers waiting for early intervention services, which is now being edited for publication. Looking ahead, she hopes to work in a pediatric inpatient setting specializing in orthotics and prosthetics, where she can make a lasting impact on children and families.

To future students, Arianna offers this advice: 鈥淭ake full advantage of every opportunity. Build relationships with your professors, get involved, and don鈥檛 be afraid to ask questions, even the silly ones. You only get out what you put in, and Salem State is full of people who want to see you succeed.鈥 She also emphasizes the importance of balance, between working hard, having fun, and leaning on your support system.

Arianna鈥檚 favorite place to study was the library, especially the study rooms with whiteboard walls and large tables to spread out. When she wasn鈥檛 studying, she enjoyed spending time at the O鈥橩eefe 麻豆成人精品, whether for extracurriculars, workouts, or research projects with friends.

Grateful for her time at Salem State, Arianna says, 鈥淭he experiences I had here, both in and out of the classroom, shaped who I am today. I encourage every student to embrace the journey and make the most of it.鈥
