Study Abroad Process

Choosing a Program

  • Students meet with Study Abroad staff at least one semester before they plan to study abroad. Email study abroad to schedule an appointment.
  • Students and staff will look for programs that:
    • offer courses toward their major, minor, or to fulfill general education requirements
    • fit the students’ budget
    • is in a location that is interesting to the student
    • the student meets the general requirements (for example, if there is a GPA minimum, or if a student needs a certain level of a language)

Applying to a Program

  • Students will pick one program they wish to apply to – so long as they apply by the program deadline and meet the requirements, we expect them to be accepted.
  • Students complete a budget sheet with the study abroad staff
  • Students meet with a financial aid advisor to discuss their specific aid packages
  • Students complete the Salem State Study Abroad Application, consisting of:
    • A personal statement as to why they want to study abroad
    • A copy of their transcripts to show they meet the GPA requirement (varies by program)
    • Disciplinary Clearance Form, answering whether or not they have been in trouble on campus
    • A copy of their passport 
      • If a student does not yet have a passport, the study abroad staff will assist the student with the process
    • A letter of recommendation from a faculty

After the student is approved, the study abroad staff will then assist the student with any next steps.

 

Post-Acceptance Steps

  • Students will work with the study abroad staff and their academic advisors to select courses
  • Study abroad staff will assist students if they need to apply for a student visa
  • All students going abroad will attend a pre-departure orientation the semester before their program. They will go over topics to prepare for going abroad, such as: phones, banking, insurance, health and safety, what to pack, travel logistics, what to expect in their classes, what to expect for housing, and more

While Abroad

  • When students arrive to their study abroad program, they will receive an on-site orientation with the local staff
  • Salem State will remain in communication with students regarding important information:
    • Registering for courses for the next semester while they are currently abroad
    • Housing upon return (if living on campus)
    • Current events and what is happening on campus
  • The study abroad staff also remains in communication with students while they are abroad, in case the student needs any additional support
